Here we have one of the finest and most tastefully ornamented American hunting case pocket watches extant, by the late great Elgin Watch Co., est. 1864 in Chicago as The National Watch Co. before relocating for the next 100 years to Elgin, Illinois. The substantial square hinged case is outlined with multi-layered coin edges framing a graceful bird in flight on the front and a shield on the reverse, engraved with the letter 'W' for the original owner, one L. M. Wright, whose inscription appears on the couvette. The bird and shield center decorative backgrounds composed of an interwoven nautilus, or swirl motif. 'Elgin' appears on the porcelain dial along with slender roman numeral chapters and a subsidiary second hand dial. A late nineteenth century beauty in rich and gleaming 18K yellow gold. At 1 and 3/16 inch diameter this treasured timepiece is suitable for a lady or gent.
