Malachite and Blue Enamel Locket Necklace

This striking, sophisticated and highly unusual locket necklace centers on a square cut-cornered, or octagonal, malachite plaque presented in a multi-layered beveled frame highlighted with contrasting periwinkle blue enamel and 18 karat yellow gold. The reverse discloses a hinged locket door in which to house a picture of your loved one. This intriguing locket is surmounted by a matching enamel top overlayed with a two-tone gold rosette. Both pendants hang from a sweet vintage 16-inch chain and the locket may be separated from the top to create a much simpler necklace. We suspect that this wonderful jewel was originally created in late-nineteenth or early twentieth century France as a pin locket and was converted to a necklace at a later date, perhaps covering the hallmarks. Just a hunch. Whatever case, here is a truly delightful and singular antique locket necklace and enduring treasure..
