A watchcock is a verge fusee watch cover plate to protect the delicate parts of the movement. These cocks are screwed on the rear of the watch, directly over the movement and are only seen when these antique watches are taken from their outer cases. Usually, these cocks were decorated in the styles of the period and they serve as an extra source in dating such watches.
