Diffusion treatment is a treatment used to alter the color of a gemstone (mostly for sapphires). Smaller atoms of mainly beryllium enter the lattice of the crystal and diffuse deep in it. This fairly recent treatment (1990's) is in some cases only detectable by the use of sophisticated laboratory techniques.
