Faience, when used in combination with the prefix 'Egyptian' refers to a non-clay based ceramic used by the Egyptians to create colored glazed objects. One specific purpose of faience was creating beads to substitute for gem materials like lapis lazulli, carnelian, malachite and turqoise.
