Portrait of Louis XIV (1661) by Charles le Brun
Louis XIV (or Louis the 14th) was the king of France from 1643 to 1715. He was the last true absolute King of France who ruled the country with a firm hand. His nickname is "The Sun King". During the baroque his court designers, Charles Le Brun and Jean Bèrain, greatly influenced the arts. In France - as in many other European countries - the specific taste of the Sun King is referred to as the Louis XIV style. On the English Isles, this style is known as early Georgian.
