Micro-mosaics are mosaics created from small glass tesserae or smalti. Very small tiles were embedded in a cement to create images or patterns. Altough the technique dates back from ancient Greece, this now typical Roman technique was mainly used in jewelry during the 19th century. Castellani was one of the great innovators of the art in the second half of the 1800's.
