Semi-precious is a term used to describe any gemstones that are not diamond, ruby, sapphire or emerald. Generally the term is used to refer to gemstones that are lower in cost or quality and extremely abundant. Gemologists today eschew this term as not accurately reflecting the material it refers to. For example: Highly included, poor quality emeralds can be very inexpensive, whereby certain tourmalines can be very costly.
