Silhouette of a young Beethoven, 18th century

A silhouette (named after French finance minister Etienne de Silhouette) was originally a portrait "en profile" cut from black card. Later it was also used in glyptography, especially cameos. This style was very popular during the neoclassical era from 1750 onwards.
