From the 18th century onwards the tourism industry started to grow and travelers brought home memorabilia to be displaced in, sometimes escpecially crafted, cabinets to serve both as conversational material aswell as given the owners the oppertunity to display their sophistication. Among the souvenirs that were brought back was jewelry in a style of the visited countries. From Italy, one of the favorite traveling destinations in the 18th and 19th century, came jewelry with Roman micro-mosaics which pictured the ruins of ancient Rome.
