A trompe l'oeil is a painting or engraving that creates an illusion, usually an illusion of depth. This French term literally means deceives the eye. Trompe l'oeils were also applied to staircases. In modern days the trompe l'oeil technique is applied to create an illusion of depth or height through mirrors, placing of enlongated wooden planks on floors etc., to make a space look larger that it in realty is.
