Aqua Regia translates from Latin as “royal water.” It is a combination of hydrochloric acid and nitric acids that dissolve gold and platinum. Mixed in different concentrations, these acids can be used to determine the fineness of precious metals. This is accomplished by applying the acid over a streak of metal rubbed on a touchstone and observing the rate at which the metal streak dissolves.
