A gemologist is someone who is certified by a specialty school, college or university in the identification and evaluation of gemstones. Along with identifying gems and evaluating their quality, a gemologist must be able to separate natural gem materials from synthetics and imitations and identify any treatments or enhancements that may be present. Specialty scientific equipment such as a gem microscope,  refractometer, spectroscope, dichroscope and other professional equipment assist with this process.
