Queen Alexandra, queen consort of of Edward VII of the United Kingdom, popularized the style by wearing multiple strands of close fitting pearls or other gems purportedly to conceal a scar on her neck. Worn alone or in combination with longer necklaces, the dog collar became the central iconic element in Edwardian jewelry fashion.
