A dog collar, collier de chien, is a necklace that fits closely about the neck. Often designed around a central plaque de cou and completed by a ribbon or multiple strands of small pearls. Queen Alexandra, queen consort of of Edward VII of the United Kingdom, popularized the style by wearing multiple strands of close fitting pearls or other gems purportedly to conceal a scar on her neck. Worn alone or in combination with longer necklaces, the dog collar became the central iconic element in Edwardian jewelry fashion.
