Federal Trade Commission

The Federal Trade Commission was established to help protect consumers interests and provide guidelines for commerce. The FTC Works with federal and state legislatures and international government agencies. It develops policies, research tools and creates educational programs for consumers and businesses alike.

Since 1914, the FTC has worked to prevent unfair methods of competition in commerce. In 1938, Congress passed a broad prohibition against “unfair and deceptive acts or practices.” Since that time the FTC has been directed to oversee a wide variety of consumer protection laws. In 1975, the FTC was given the authority to adopt industry-wide trade regulation rules.
