Grisaille is a monochromatic enameling process that begins with a layer of black (or very dark) enamel. White enamel is applied over the black to make the design and to create various shades of grey by varying its depth and transparency. The design is made to appear in relief by the application of layers of black, white and grey enamel. Translated from the French grisaille means “in the grey.” The term grisaille is also used as a name for matte, grey or steel finish on a watch dial.
