A lipstick case is designed to hold… lipstick! Most lipstick today comes prepackaged in a plastic tube or pot but that was not always the case. Lipstick manufacturers went to elaborate lengths to create fanciful lipstick cases. Tonier women carried lipstick cases made of gold and silver decorated with gemstones and enamel sometimes with a matching compact or secreted within a minaudière. As the wearing of lipstick became more acceptable after the turn of the twentieth century the elegant presentation of this essential beauty aid became the norm.
