Mourning jewelry was traditionally worn by a person mourning a loved one. During the 16th through 18th century, memento mori jewelry was popular for mourning, becoming even more popular following the death of Prince Albert. Queen Victoria remained in mourning until her passing in 1901. Her exceedingly long mourning period caused a revival of mourning jewelry. During the latter half of the 19th century, mourning jewels were of somber design with black as the primary color for any gemstones and enamel. Typical materials used were black enameljetonyxhuman hairglassvulcanite, and gutta-percha.
