Pavé translates as a paving-stone setting. In this technique many small stones are set very close together in order to cover an entire piece, concealing the metal. The stones are held in place by small burrs of metal pushed over the girdle of the stone and are often laid out in concentric circles.

An item covered in stones using the pavé technique is said to have a pavé setting or to be pavé set.
