Pliny the Elder, Latin name: Gaius Plinius Secundus (AD 23 – August 25, 79). Author of Naturalis Historia, and encyclopedic work in the typical Roman style of grand rhetoric. Pliny describes everything around him in his 37 books that form his life's work. Book 33 covers precious metals and their use and book 37 does the same with gemstones. His accounts are of invaluable importance to the jewelry historian because in many cases his writings are the first historical source on the subject.
