It all started with 'Black Beauty,' the beloved 1877 novel by English author Anna Sewell.

I read it as a young girl and was instantly smitten. An after-school play date turned into free riding lessons in exchange for helping out at the stables, and before I knew it, I was full-blown infatuated. Despite my desperate pleadings, my bemused parents did not consider a horse of my own to be a suitable birthday gift, and so I nursed my heartbreak as courageously as I could. First loves fade, but their memories can be awakened in an instant, like when I first spied the plethora of delightful equestrian-themed pins and brooches in the Lang collection.
