Semi-precious is a term used to describe any gemstones that are not diamond, ruby, sapphire or emerald. Generally, the term refers to gemstones that are lower in cost or quality and extremely abundant. Gemologists today eschew this term as not accurately reflecting the material it refers to. For example, highly-included, poor-quality emeralds can be inexpensive, while certain tourmalines can be very costly.
