Asterism

Asterism is an optical phenomenon that results in the reflection of light rays on a gemstone, cut en cabochon, forming a star. Dense, fine parallel inclusions cause light to reflect as a ray perpendicular to these inclusions. These stars can have six rays, four rays and, rarely, twelve rays. When the light reflects as only one ray that phenomenon is called a cat’s-eye.
