A barrette is a hair ornament that resembles a brooch and is clasped into the hair strictly for decoration or to secure hair in place. Instead of a pin mechanism on the reverse, a barrette has a bar across the center that hooks into a fastener at the opposite side. Hair is gripped by the resultant tension between the bar and the front section.
Barrettes are sometimes referred to has hair-slides or hair-clips.
