Diffusion treatment is a treatment used to alter the color of a gemstone (mostly  sapphires). Smaller atoms, usually beryllium, enter the lattice of the crystal and penetrate it deeply. This fairly recent treatment, dating to the1990’s,  is in some cases only detectable by the use of sophisticated laboratory techniques.
