Henry Steig (1906-1973)
Modernist Jeweler
Self-taught metalsmith with training in art and sculpture.
c.1922-1932: He was a Jazz saxophone and clarinet player with New York dance bands.
c.1932-1935: Commercial Artist and cartoonist for Life and the New Yorker.
c.?- 1941: Wrote short stories, and a novel and moved to Hollywood to write screenplays
c.1945-1948: Steig Products, manufactured artist’s colors.
c.1947-1963:
- Began to make jewelry
- Worked mostly in silver
c.1950: Opened 2 stores – Manhattan on 51st st. and Provincetown MA on Commercial St.
c.1963: Moved to Provincetown and worked as a painter and made jewelry until his death.
c.1972: Sold his Provincetown shop and his design rights to Jan Dee of Chicago.
