Prince Albert

Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (1819-1861) was the spouse of Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. The Prince Consort was a great patron of the arts and he initiated the Great Exhibition of 1851 in London. After his death, Queen Victoria remained in mourning throughout the rest of her life which resulted in the fashion of wearing jet and other mourning jewelry.
