The place on jewelry, or the finding where a gem can be attached by one of several means, usually involving gripping the girdle of the stone. Setting also refers to the method or technique by which the stone is secured. The various setting methods were/are dependent on the technology available at the time the setting was made and the shape of the stone itself.
