To be translucent is to transmit light, but diffusely, so that objects beneath cannot be clearly resolved. Translucent enamel is used to add color while letting what is underneath show through diffusely. This is used to great effect in Guilloché Enamel where an intricately engraved pattern, covered in translucent enamel, enhances the design beneath.
Translucent gemstones are those gems having inclusions that are so dense they cause the stone to lose transparency, yet still allow some light to pass through.
