ABOUT THIS NECKLACE

Convincingly reputed to be formerly part of the Spanish Crown Jewels, in the story passed to us, this impressive museum quality ensemble could have been plucked right from a royal palace painting. The three and one-half inch long centerpiece (crowned by a golden angel) highlights a gorgeous, vibrant green, 2.00 carat Colombian emerald, and a scintillating old mine-cut diamond weighing 1.85 carats. The centerpiece and matching 3 and one-quarter inch long earrings (each containing a one carat plus emerald) are masterfully hand fabricated in 14K gold and adorned with silver diamond-set frames and bows, with screw-fitting earring findings added later. The seven spacers on the swag pearl tassel necklace are each set with a pair of smaller oval emeralds. A truly magnificent and majestic set of jewels, dating back to the early-19th century. Unfortunately, a matching brooch and hair ornament (see November 9, 1940 attached letter) are lost to history.

*This exquisite set of jewels was made to order for Ferdinand VII, King of Spain, the year 1812. It was a gift to the Queen in commemoration of the expulsion of Napoleon from Spain at that time. It remained the Royal property and was part of the Crown Jewels of Isabelle II who reigned in Spain from 1843 to 1868. It was also part of the Crown Jewels during the reign of King Alfonso XIII of Spain who started his reign in 1901 and who abdicated in the Revolution of 1932. It was part of the collection of jewels which Alfonso determined to dispose of after his exile with the intention of raising a huge fund to start a counter revolution against the Spanish Socialist Republic. This fund was raised in France and was used to finance the Franco Rebellion against the Spanish Republic which eventually culminated in the recent Spanish Civil War. These jewels were disposed of through the Spanish Ambassador who was a Royalist and were bought by a French Broker who brought it to this country for sale.

This is the history we have, not a guarantee of provenance.

Georgian Jewelry

True antiques, Georgian jewels are the earliest pieces in our collection. Lovely foil-backed stones in mixed-metal settings were made to shine by candlelight over dinner and in the drawing rooms of their genteel wearers. Many pieces were made in memory of loved ones or as “memento mori”—literal reminders of mortality that Georgians saw as sophisticated, rather than morbid. While the delicacy of Georgian era settings has been replaced by more modern methods, the cuts and styles have continued to fascinate jewelry lovers.

Jewelry Care

As with anything of value, especially sentimental value, taking good care of your vintage and antique jewelry from Lang will enhance its beauty and extend its lifespan. We encourage you to have your jewelry checked and cleaned by us or by your trusted local jeweler every six months, to ensure that each piece is in good wearable condition with all gemstones in place. It’s not uncommon for stones to loosen over time, and it’s much easier to tighten a loose stone than to replace a lost one! As stated in our Repair Policy, we strongly recommend that you allow us to perform any repairs, since our jewelers are specialists in restoring vintage and antique jewelry.
