ABOUT THIS BROOCH

This extremely fine feathered and fabulous Edwardian pair of ruby-eyed pheasants (husband and wife!), dating back to the turn-of-the-last-century, boasts gorgeous plumes composed of bright vibrant apple green demantoid garnets from the Ural Mountains of Russia contrasted with bright-white and sparkling European-cut diamonds (note the reverse coloration between the two). Artfully hand fabricated in platinum over 18K yellow gold, they measures 2 3/8 inches from beak to tail. Starla, our intrepid in-house gemologist and researcher discovered the original July 17,1894 patented design by *William Scheer. Although this very happy couple have been together all their lives, if you insist we will sell them separately for $11750 each.

*By 1929 William Scheer was the largest manufacturing jeweler in America creating over 50% of the fine jewelry in the country. His prosperous clients were Marcus & Co, Tiffany & Co., Black Starr and Frost, Raymond Yard, Udall & Ballou, Harry Winston, Cartier (New York), Spaulding & Co, C.D. Peacock, Shreve Crump & Low, Galt & Brothers in Washington, D.C., Brock & Co of Los Angeles, Shreve & Co. of San Francisco, just to name some. The majority of William Scheers work was unsigned or only signed by the retailer. They made line bracelets of all widths utilizing all the new fancy cut diamonds, long elaborate diamond necklaces with suspending carved emeralds or detachable diamond plaques, shorter necklaces including carved Indian rubies, emeralds, and sapphires, and endless varieties of brooches with intricate lapidary work. Ornate watches for men with rock crystal and diamonds to ladies baguette watch bracelets and brooches. He created jeweled accessories like handbag frames, cigarette holders and elaborate vanity and cigarette cases after French originals. The quality of his contemporary and chic designs favorably compared with the finest French jewelers.

About Edwardian Jewelry

Edwardians took the dark beauty of Victorian jewelry and dyed it platinum blonde. Light and airy filigree, worked with intricate millegrain and detailed designs in that durable metal, was liberally set with the “white” stones—pearls and diamonds chief among them. The Victorians’ sense of whimsy and beloved yellow gold didn’t disappear completely, though, even as the Edwardian era made way for the further-streamlined Art Deco.

Jewelry Care

As with anything of value, especially sentimental value, taking good care of your vintage and antique jewelry from Lang will enhance its beauty and extend its lifespan. We encourage you to have your jewelry checked and cleaned by us or by your trusted local jeweler every six months, to ensure that each piece is in good wearable condition with all gemstones in place. It’s not uncommon for stones to loosen over time, and it’s much easier to tighten a loose stone than to replace a lost one! As stated in our Repair Policy, we strongly recommend that you allow us to perform any repairs, since our jewelers are specialists in restoring vintage and antique jewelry.
