ABOUT THIS NECKLACE

Established in 1803 and known as "the Tiffany of India," Hamilton Co. of Calcutta, India is a renowned jewelry and silversmithing firm, which manufactured many items for Tiffany & Co. during the late 19th century through the early 20th century. This exquisitely designed serpent, hand fabricated in 18K tri-color gold, curves with the greatest of ease around your neck. Its elaborately hand-engraved head is crowned with a glowing, deep purplish-red cabochon garnet and is set with tiny garnet eyes that keep fierce watch over the ornate heart dangle--centered with a gleaming rose-pink garnet--that symbolizes deep fidelity to a loved one. Not only is it accompanied by a custom box that perfectly fits its every curve, it also comes with a note indicating that it was a wedding present to Mother Bailey, presented to her in Calucutta in 1865. Signed "Dec 1913 LEM." Truly a most collectable treasure. Total garnet weight, 5.15 carats. Chain measures 15 inches, snake head and heart, 2 inches.

About Victorian Jewelry

The eclectic Victorians didn’t limit themselves when it came to motifs and themes—if it struck their fancy, they turned it into jewelry. Sweet and sentimental with a distinct romantic streak, Victorian gems expanded upon their Georgian predecessors. The array of styles that blossomed (sometimes quite literally) during this era endure to this day.

Jewelry Care

As with anything of value, especially sentimental value, taking good care of your vintage and antique jewelry from Lang will enhance its beauty and extend its lifespan. We encourage you to have your jewelry checked and cleaned by us or by your trusted local jeweler every six months, to ensure that each piece is in good wearable condition with all gemstones in place. It’s not uncommon for stones to loosen over time, and it’s much easier to tighten a loose stone than to replace a lost one! As stated in our Repair Policy, we strongly recommend that you allow us to perform any repairs, since our jewelers are specialists in restoring vintage and antique jewelry.
