ABOUT THIS BROOCH

A ravishing and remarkable late-18th~early-19th century Georgian flower brooch masterfully crafted 'en tremblant': "En tremblant" is a French term - meaning "to tremble". It was first used to describe 18th and 19th century jewelry where parts of the diamond set pieces were attached to a trembler to create movement in the jewel when worn. Brooches in particular were fitted this way which was particularly effective in reflecting the fire of candlelight. (Courtesy of AJU - Antique Jewelry University). This magnificent example is intricately crafted in silver over 18 karat gold and glistens all over with an array of closely set old mine-cut and rose-cut diamonds totaling 5.50 carats. The brooch is comfortably nestled in a leather box from the venerable London purveyor of rare jewels - S.J. Phillips. 3 inches by 1 3/4 inches.

Georgian Jewelry

True antiques, Georgian jewels are the earliest pieces in our collection. Lovely foil-backed stones in mixed-metal settings were made to shine by candlelight over dinner and in the drawing rooms of their genteel wearers. Many pieces were made in memory of loved ones or as “memento mori”—literal reminders of mortality that Georgians saw as sophisticated, rather than morbid. While the delicacy of Georgian era settings has been replaced by more modern methods, the cuts and styles have continued to fascinate jewelry lovers.

Jewelry Care

As with anything of value, especially sentimental value, taking good care of your vintage and antique jewelry from Lang will enhance its beauty and extend its lifespan. We encourage you to have your jewelry checked and cleaned by us or by your trusted local jeweler every six months, to ensure that each piece is in good wearable condition with all gemstones in place. It’s not uncommon for stones to loosen over time, and it’s much easier to tighten a loose stone than to replace a lost one! As stated in our Repair Policy, we strongly recommend that you allow us to perform any repairs, since our jewelers are specialists in restoring vintage and antique jewelry.
