Art Nouveau Habille Portrait Pendant with Mirror
How delightful! In this exquisitely hand-engraved Art Nouveau habillé (the French term for dressing oneself) pendant, a lovely lady in profile is adorned with flowers--the one in her hair, centered by a twinkling diamond--and dressed with a dainty diamond choker of rose-cut diamonds. Gleaming with a satiny gold
finish, the pendant opens to reveal a beveled mirror. Engraved on the reverse side with the monogram "GC" and the sentiment "Recuerdo (Spanish for "memory"), 2 September 1895." From the father and son watchmakers Pierre and Alfred Frainier, founders of the Watch Box Manufacture located in Morteau, France. The Frainiers were originally from Porrentruy in Switzerland where the father had created a company manufacturing watch cases. Quickly, he was able to create a new art style with very artisanal and high-quality manufacturing methods. Their art was practiced over two generations from 1864 to 1930. Rendered in 18K gold, hand-engraved. Chain measures 18 inches.
