Large Aurora Fresco Cameo Brooch
It's a new day and, Aurora, the Roman goddess of dawn, leads the way. Beautifully representing the ceiling fresco painted in 1614 for Roman Cardinal Scipione Borghese's summer house, this extravagantly sized ( 4 1/4 by 3 1/8 inches!) shell cameo brooch depicts Aurora leading Apollo, the god of light, out of the darkness as female dancers known as Hours--symbolizing the passage of time--dance alongside his chariot. A torch-bearing Putto (an ancient personification of the Morning Star) flies above. This breathtaking hand carved jewel is set in an undulating, brightly burnished hand fabricated 18K gold frame rimmed with rope and chain detailing. A rare and wonderful work of wearable art - circa late-19th century, signed by the artist 'Quaglia' in the lower right.
