ABOUT THIS BROOCH

A work of wearable art courtesy of Mother Nature and an anonymous master sculptor. Measuring a striking 2 1/2 by just shy of 1 1/2 inches, this unique nature-inspired masterpiece, dating back to the 1930s-40s, presents a brilliant hand carving depicting a quartet of intricate Chrysanthemum flowers and sinuous stems and leaves magically blooming in high relief from a single specimen of bright orangy-salmon coral. In addition to the exquisitely carved Japanese floral motif, other elements of this stunning brooch-- particularly the flat back with two crossbars--lead us to believe that this was once used as an obidome. Because there is always room for another touch of adornment, an obidome is a small brooch that is threaded onto an obijime (a string of sorts), which ties around the broad sash--an obi--that is worn with a Japanese kimono. While you might not own a kimono, this vintage beauty will add a dash of sartorial flair at the waist of your favorite frock.

About Retro Jewelry

Hollywood glam got creative during the war era, when strategic factors forced jewelers to do without certain materials. Rather than scale back, they took the streamlined shapes of the Art Deco and went big, bold, and gold with them! Retro power pieces segued from the Jazz Age to the Fabulous Fifties, creating many motifs of vintage jewelry along the way.

Jewelry Care

As with anything of value, especially sentimental value, taking good care of your vintage and antique jewelry from Lang will enhance its beauty and extend its lifespan. We encourage you to have your jewelry checked and cleaned by us or by your trusted local jeweler every six months, to ensure that each piece is in good wearable condition with all gemstones in place. It’s not uncommon for stones to loosen over time, and it’s much easier to tighten a loose stone than to replace a lost one! As stated in our Repair Policy, we strongly recommend that you allow us to perform any repairs, since our jewelers are specialists in restoring vintage and antique jewelry.
