ABOUT THIS NECKLACE

In the French region of Auvergne, specifically Le Puy-en-Velay, the Saint Esprit cross--or Holy Spirit cross--was a highly symbolic pendant that was popular in France during the late 18th century, and this striking version beautifully presents the characteristics of the style. An intricately fashioned hand fabricated 18K gold cross with textured edges is colored with white enamel accented with tiny green dots and set with five intensely vivid purplish-red garnets, while three dangling rose-colored glass drops represent the tears of Christ. The cross suspends from a complementary top set with an oval garnet and embellished with two glass drops. A rare collectable. Ribbon not included. Georgian, circa 1850. Condition note: enamel shows wear commensurate with age of piece.

Georgian Jewelry

True antiques, Georgian jewels are the earliest pieces in our collection. Lovely foil-backed stones in mixed-metal settings were made to shine by candlelight over dinner and in the drawing rooms of their genteel wearers. Many pieces were made in memory of loved ones or as “memento mori”—literal reminders of mortality that Georgians saw as sophisticated, rather than morbid. While the delicacy of Georgian era settings has been replaced by more modern methods, the cuts and styles have continued to fascinate jewelry lovers.

Jewelry Care

As with anything of value, especially sentimental value, taking good care of your vintage and antique jewelry from Lang will enhance its beauty and extend its lifespan. We encourage you to have your jewelry checked and cleaned by us or by your trusted local jeweler every six months, to ensure that each piece is in good wearable condition with all gemstones in place. It’s not uncommon for stones to loosen over time, and it’s much easier to tighten a loose stone than to replace a lost one! As stated in our Repair Policy, we strongly recommend that you allow us to perform any repairs, since our jewelers are specialists in restoring vintage and antique jewelry.
