ABOUT THIS BROOCH
A distinguished and very serious (hungover?) looking elder Bacchus - the Roman god of wine and revelry - (Dionysus in ancient Greek mythology) is artfully captured in deep salmon-colored Mediterranean coral. The venerable Mr. B is presented atop a golden frame ornamented with sinuous vines of grape leaves and a pair of carved coral flowers, in this singular, sensational and sizable brooch from late-nineteenth~early-twentieth century Italy. This intoxicating antique jewel measures 1 7/8 inches across by just over 1 5/8 inches high. One small grape leaf is apparently lacking on the lower right side.
