ABOUT THIS BROOCH

Pretty as a peacock and then some - this exquisite work of Edwardian-era jewelry boasts a proud provenance. Starla, our intrepid in-house gemologist and jewelry researcher, discovered that the jewelry designer William Scheer* patented his wonderful peacock designs back in 1894! Hand-fabricated in platinum over 18K yellow gold, this beautiful bird is studded throughout with glittering apple-green demantoid garnets (courtesy of the Ural Mountains of Russia), icy-white old mine-cut diamonds, and vibrant blue faceted round sapphires. He measures just over 2 inches from beak to tail feathers. Total diamond weight - .92 carat, total colored gemstone weight - 1.67 carats.

 

*By 1929, William Scheer was the largest manufacturing jeweler in America, creating over 50% of the fine jewelry in the country. His prosperous clients included Marcus & Co., Tiffany & Co., Black Starr and Frost, Raymond Yard, Harry Winston, Cartier (New York), C.D. Peacock, Shreve Crump & Low, Galt & Brothers in Washington, D.C., Brock & Co. of Los Angeles, Shreve & Co. of San Francisco, just to name a few. The majority of William Scheer's work was unsigned or only signed by the retailer. He also created jeweled accessories such as handbag frames, cigarette holders, and elaborate vanity and cigarette cases after French originals. The quality of his chic designs favorably compared with the finest French jewelers of the period.

About Edwardian Jewelry

Edwardians took the dark beauty of Victorian jewelry and dyed it platinum blonde. Light and airy filigree, worked with intricate millegrain and detailed designs in that durable metal, was liberally set with the “white” stones—pearls and diamonds chief among them. The Victorians’ sense of whimsy and beloved yellow gold didn’t disappear completely, though, even as the Edwardian era made way for the further-streamlined Art Deco.
