In the Edwardian era, when dress necklines were lowered and expanses of skin were begging to be decorated, festoon (or swag) necklaces were all the rage. Queen Alexandra, King Edward's wife, wore multiple-strand pearl chokers to cover a scar, often along with a festoon necklace (layering goes way back!). This captivating composition of color, sparkle, and luster presents a focal piece featuring an oval light blue turquoise cabochon, with a hint of green, surrounded by a fancy frame set with twinkling rose-cut diamonds and a single natural pearl. All around it, swags of pearl-dotted platinum chain are accented with oval and round turquoise cabochons, while four pear-shaped drops add lovely motion. Your neckline is waiting. Total diamond weight, .30 carat. Hand fabricated, circa 1890-1900, it measures 15 3/4 inches (including the length of the chain and the width of the centerpiece).

About Edwardian Jewelry

Edwardians took the dark beauty of Victorian jewelry and dyed it platinum blonde. Light and airy filigree, worked with intricate millegrain and detailed designs in that durable metal, was liberally set with the “white” stones—pearls and diamonds chief among them.
