Egyptian Revival Multi-Stone Papyrus Brooch
ABOUT THIS BROOCH
Hmm, where to start? With evidence of Mediterranean influence (Egypt, Italy) this distinctively styled brooch is a curious mix of elements. Stylized papyrus (or palm fronds), hand fabricated in shimmering, bright 19K gold (rather unusual in itself), create a plume of sorts, embellished with four vibrant square-cut stones--two garnets, a peridot, and a topaz--and one shield-shaped amethyst. Finishing things off is the enameled head of an animal that we determined is a dog (we ruled out platypus because it has ears), perhaps a Pharaoh's Hound as would befit the theme. Total gemstone weight, 2.68 carats.
