ABOUT THIS RING

A lovely tribute to Georgian sentimentality. This silver-topped 16K gold (rather unusual) mourning ring features a shallow foil backed rose colored garnet surrounded with rose-cut, mine -cut and European-cut diamonds. Engraved on the outside of the shank "Mary Fordham-OB-7OCT-1768". Typically these rings were given at the funerals to close friends and/or family members as specified in the will of the deceased. The ring measures 1/2 inch across the crown and 1/16 inch at the back of the shank. A piece of this age should be worn with care and respect as jewels which have survived 250 years are delicate flowers. Currently a size 8 1/2.

Georgian Jewelry

True antiques, Georgian jewels are the earliest pieces in our collection. Lovely foil-backed stones in mixed-metal settings were made to shine by candlelight over dinner and in the drawing rooms of their genteel wearers. Many pieces were made in memory of loved ones or as “memento mori”—literal reminders of mortality that Georgians saw as sophisticated, rather than morbid. While the delicacy of Georgian era settings has been replaced by more modern methods, the cuts and styles have continued to fascinate jewelry lovers.

Jewelry Care

As with anything of value, especially sentimental value, taking good care of your vintage and antique jewelry from Lang will enhance its beauty and extend its lifespan. We encourage you to have your jewelry checked and cleaned by us or by your trusted local jeweler every six months, to ensure that each piece is in good wearable condition with all gemstones in place. It’s not uncommon for stones to loosen over time, and it’s much easier to tighten a loose stone than to replace a lost one! As stated in our Repair Policy, we strongly recommend that you allow us to perform any repairs, since our jewelers are specialists in restoring vintage and antique jewelry.
