Stuart Crystal Ring, Circa 1700
30-1-13500
ABOUT THIS RING
An extraordinary piece of history. The top of this jewel (the shank is newer), hand fabricated in 18K gold, circa 1700, is an exceedingly rare and fascinating Stuart crystal, so named for loyalists who wore them after the death of King Charles I of the House of Stuart in 1649. Rock crystal stones were laid over the king's initials (cipher), a miniature portrait, or--for a very few--a lock of his hair. Most likely once a button or part of a set of cufflinks, this emerald-cut crystal displays a cipher of twisted wire, probably initials (perhaps the king's?), backed by vibrant pink foil. An utterly intriguing and singular collectable. The 15K gold shank is currently ring size 6. As is expected for its age, this ring is not for everyday wear. Currently ring size 6.
