Hopelessly romantic, Victorians (and Edwardians) were not shy about sharing their feelings, and the clever jewelers of the day were happy to help them do so. While love notes were a sweet way to convey sentiment, a wearable expression was even better--especially one created with sparkling, bright gems. Enter acrostic jewelry. Its origins credited to Parisian jeweler, Jean-Baptiste Mellerio, these pieces used the first letter of each gem to spell out a word and were highly popular during the Victorian era. This sleek brooch, crafted in gleaming, velvety 14K gold, circa 1900, uses a ruby, emerald, garnet, amethyst, another ruby (all quite gemmy), and a diamond to spell 'regard.' A most charming way to make your intentions known. Measures 2 3/8 inches long. Total gemstone weight, .98 carat.
