ABOUT THIS BROOCH

Beautifully crafted in rich 18 karat gold and glittering gemstones, this bold, delightfully fearsome and highly detailed brooch depicts the mythological creature the cockatrice, coming to us largely from Elizabethan literature. About the size of a large rooster, these terrifying little creatures have the head, claws and wings of a rooster with a lizard or serpent tail. Their powers include the ability to kill or petrify to stone with either their gaze or their breath, and curiously, only the weasel is immune to these fiendish abilities. They can only be scared off by the crow of a genuine rooster, and humans can only hope to kill them with a mirror, exposing them to their own deadly gaze. A unique and special jewel, not for the faint of heart! Brooch measures 2 7/8 inches by 3 inches.

About Mid-Century Jewelry

Mid-Century jewelers gave the Victorians a run for their money when it came to variety—with the added bonus of big, bold gems in every shape, size, and color. Themes of previous eras were made fabulous enough to match the optimism of the post-war world. Transitional pieces bridged the gap between the first and second half of the 20th century.

Jewelry Care

As with anything of value, especially sentimental value, taking good care of your vintage and antique jewelry from Lang will enhance its beauty and extend its lifespan. We encourage you to have your jewelry checked and cleaned by us or by your trusted local jeweler every six months, to ensure that each piece is in good wearable condition with all gemstones in place. It’s not uncommon for stones to loosen over time, and it’s much easier to tighten a loose stone than to replace a lost one! As stated in our Repair Policy, we strongly recommend that you allow us to perform any repairs, since our jewelers are specialists in restoring vintage and antique jewelry.
