ABOUT THIS NECKLACE

This is a magnificent 22k Italian neckpiece designed by Marchesini* around 1870, impeccably crafted and in pristine condition. It is rendered in an archaeological style, focusing on the fine filigree and granulation which was inspired by the jewels discovered in ancient Etruscan tombs unearthed in Italy in the 1800s. The neckpiece consists of 24 slightly graduating, round, faceted peridots, each topped with a faceted ruby bale, adorned with hand-fabricated Etruscan inspiration, interpersed with decorative granulated dangling elements, each also fashioned with ruby bales. Measuring 16" in overall length, this neckpiece can only be described as sublime, both aesthetically and historically. The clasp has an attached plaque reading "SUCCESSORI MARCHESINI". *The firm of Niccola Marchesini had branches in Rome and in Florence. According to the Annuario Commerciale e Industriale for Florence of 1869, they had shops at 9 via de Tornabuoni and 8-9 Ponte Vecchio. The Murray Guides to Rome record them as 'Court Jewellers' at 138 Corso in 1875 and they were still flourishing in 1900.

About Victorian Jewelry

The eclectic Victorians didn’t limit themselves when it came to motifs and themes—if it struck their fancy, they turned it into jewelry. Sweet and sentimental with a distinct romantic streak, Victorian gems expanded upon their Georgian predecessors. The array of styles that blossomed (sometimes quite literally) during this era endure to this day.

Jewelry Care

As with anything of value, especially sentimental value, taking good care of your vintage and antique jewelry from Lang will enhance its beauty and extend its lifespan. We encourage you to have your jewelry checked and cleaned by us or by your trusted local jeweler every six months, to ensure that each piece is in good wearable condition with all gemstones in place. It’s not uncommon for stones to loosen over time, and it’s much easier to tighten a loose stone than to replace a lost one! As stated in our Repair Policy, we strongly recommend that you allow us to perform any repairs, since our jewelers are specialists in restoring vintage and antique jewelry.
