Wearing mourning jewelry was customary, if not strictly required, during the long reign of Queen Victoria. Women followed the proper etiquette in regards to what was appropriate to wear, do and say while mourning a lost one. This 18K yellow gold sardonyx cameo of a lady in profile is most definitely a piece meant to be worn for mourning. The cameo is surrounded by borders of French jet (black glass) and seed pearls and can be worn as a pendant or as a pin, engraved on the back ‘July 26th 1864, 1 1/2 tall by 1 1/4 wide.
