Jewelry Preservation – When to Take it Off

“Parting is such sweet sorrow that I shall say goodnight till it be morrow.” Once again, the wise and witty wordsmith William Shakespeare penned a sentiment that, while true for love birds, also aptly expresses the pang of parting with your beloved jewelry, whether when sleeping or swimming. Alas, to preserve your precious jewels and maintain their beauty, you must spare them from some of life’s daily rigors and rituals. Take note of these basic dos and don’ts.

Housework, Gardening, and Cooking? No!

No need for your jewels to join you as you clean the house. Vigorous scrubbing, dishwashing, handling appliances, and exposure to household cleaning agents, such as bleach, can cause discoloration of metals, dull stones, and can weaken the integrity of settings. While you’re outside tending the tulips, keep your jewelry inside. Gardening tools—and dirt—are not kind to accessories. You certainly want to wear your beautiful jewels when you go out for a meal, but not while you are preparing one.

While Getting All Dolled Up…

Leave your jewelry off while applying your makeup, hair products, fragrance, and lotions. When finished, wait a few minutes before you put on your jewelry.

Proper Protection is Paramount

Skin protection does not equal jewelry protection. Sunscreens and creams for baby bottoms containing zinc oxide can discolor rings and fingers! Protect your rings by removing them before applying these creams, and thoroughly wash your hands before putting them on again.

Jewelry is Excused from Workouts

Exercising and sporting activities are good for you, but not so good for jewelry that has endured through decades of wear; remove it before going to the gym or engaging in sports. This especially applies to rings that typically are no match for gym and sports equipment. Vigorous movement, especially during contact sports, puts almost all jewelry at risk for loss or damage.

Splish, Splash

Water can make your hands slippery, and cold water can make your fingers contract, both of which increase the risk of your rings slipping off. Chemicals and natural elements in swimming pools and hot springs can cause metal discoloration. Remove your jewelry before swimming, showering, or participating in any recreational water activity.

Beauty Rest–for You and Your Jewelry!

While you settle down for a good night’s sleep, allow your jewelry to rest in its own box, pouch, or separate compartment in your jewelry box to prevent scratches, tangles, tarnish, and such. Remember, parting is only temporary, and your jewels will thank you for your solicitous care. After all, they have a lifetime to live with you…and perhaps beyond.
