ABOUT THIS JEWELRY

A rare and remarkable beauty, this luscious Victorian necklace presents 29 graduated emerald-cut garnets, many of which have the unusual characteristic of color change, in fancy 18K yellow gold settings. Glimmering with an overall plum hue, some of the stones change from purple-red to purple. That so many of the garnets in the same necklace display this shift means they probably came from the same mine, which might have been discovered and quickly depleted or simply forgotten about. The wearers of such gems were probably not aware of the intriguing color shift, since the jewels were not worn in the various types of light that would make the change noticeable. Because modern sources of color-change garnets were not unearthed until the 1980s, this piece is truly a unique and captivating collectible. And because now and then, a necklace needs some company, this one is part of a set that includes a matching bracelet. Garnet weight for necklace - 78.75 carats, weight for bracelet - 19.00 carats. Necklace measures 18 inches, and the bracelet is 7 1/8 inches.

About Victorian Jewelry

The eclectic Victorians didn’t limit themselves when it came to motifs and themes—if it struck their fancy, they turned it into jewelry. Sweet and sentimental with a distinct romantic streak, Victorian gems expanded upon their Georgian predecessors. The array of styles that blossomed (sometimes quite literally) during this era endure to this day.

Jewelry Care

As with anything of value, especially sentimental value, taking good care of your vintage and antique jewelry from Lang will enhance its beauty and extend its lifespan. We encourage you to have your jewelry checked and cleaned by us or by your trusted local jeweler every six months, to ensure that each piece is in good wearable condition with all gemstones in place. It’s not uncommon for stones to loosen over time, and it’s much easier to tighten a loose stone than to replace a lost one! As stated in our Repair Policy, we strongly recommend that you allow us to perform any repairs, since our jewelers are specialists in restoring vintage and antique jewelry.
