Oh, what fate to be the god of the grape. This arresting Victorian brooch depicts Dionysus (a.k.a. Bacchus in later Roman terms)--the Greek god of the grape harvest, wine making, and all sorts of behaviors and shenanigans that might flow forth from holding such a title. Exquisitely carved from vivid salmon-colored coral, he bears a wreath of grapes upon his head and is--intriguingly--accompanied on each side by a similarly bedecked Satyr in profile. Cheers! Circa mid-19th century, hand fabricated with 14K gold pin back. *Dionysus, son of Semele, is the god of wine and dance, of irrationality and chaos, representing passion, emotions and instincts (Wikipedia).
